How Much Does a Website Cost for a Small Business in the US? (2026)

Written by the Dizayn team

Key takeaways

  • US web design agencies charge $100-149 an hour on average, and most projects reviewed on Clutch come in under $10,000 (Clutch).
  • Most ecommerce builds also land under $10,000, but the average reviewed project is $51,943 because large builds pull the number up (Clutch).
  • On top of the build you pay every year for a domain, hosting and maintenance. The wholesale cost of a .com was $10.26 a year in 2024, and each registrar adds its own markup (Verisign).

How much does a website cost for a small business?

For a small business, most agency-built websites cost under $10,000, based on Clutch's verified reviews, with the full range running from about $2,000 to over $100,000. The price comes down to who builds it, how many pages it has, whether it sells online and how much new content needs writing.

Clutch's average for web design projects is $38,105, but large projects skew that figure: Clutch itself notes most projects fall under $10,000 (Clutch). For a local business, the second number is the one to plan around.

What does each type of build cost?

There are four common routes, and they price very differently. The gap isn't only cost: it changes how much of the work lands on you, who fixes things when they break, and whether the site is built to show up in Google.

OptionHow it's billedReference figure
Template on a builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify)Monthly platform subscription, plus your time or a specialist'sPlatform specialists: $25-49/hr (Clutch)
FreelancerHourly or per projectMedian pay for employed web developers and digital designers: $47.85/hr (BLS, May 2025)
US agencyPer project$100-149/hr; most projects under $10,000 (Clutch)
Online store (ecommerce)Per project, plus platform feesMost under $10,000; average $51,943 (Clutch)
Dizayn (our own price)Per project, hosting included$3,000-15,000

A note on freelancers: the BLS figure is what an employee earns, not what an independent contractor bills. Freelancers cover their own taxes, equipment and insurance, so their rate is normally higher than that number.

What do web designers charge?

An employed web designer in the US earns a median of $104,000 a year (web and digital interface designers), and a web developer earns $92,650 (BLS, May 2025). Hire an agency instead and the typical rate is $100-149 an hour.

Those salaries are why a cheap custom site from a US agency is rare: one person's week of work costs thousands of dollars. When you see a complete site for a few hundred dollars, it's usually a template with your logo dropped in.

What are the yearly costs after launch?

You pay for the build once, but a website has recurring costs. The core three are the domain, hosting and maintenance. Before you sign, ask for each one as a separate line item so you can compare quotes fairly.

  • Domain: your address (yourbusiness.com). Verisign, which runs .com, charged registrars $10.26 a year wholesale in 2024, and registrars set their own retail price on top (Verisign).
  • Hosting: the server your site runs on. Builders bundle it into the subscription; freelancers and agencies sometimes bill it separately.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups, security and small edits. Ask whether it's included or billed hourly.
  • Transaction fees: if you sell online, the platform and payment processor take a cut of each sale.
  • SEO (optional): a site doesn't rank on its own. SEO agencies charge an average of $3,209 a month, per a survey of 439 providers across several countries (Ahrefs).

What drives the price up?

Scope moves the price more than anything: more pages, more features and more new content mean more hours. A five-page site using copy you already have costs far less than a store with hundreds of products, payments and shipping rules.

  1. Page count and unique templates. One service-page layout reused ten times is cheaper than ten different pages.
  2. Ecommerce. Catalog, cart, payments, sales tax and shipping.
  3. Two languages. An English and Spanish site is close to double the content. Our bilingual website guide walks through it.
  4. Copy and photos. If the agency writes the copy or runs a photo shoot, the price goes up.
  5. Integrations. Booking, CRM, inventory systems or forms wired into other tools.
  6. SEO from day one. Site structure, speed, structured data and pages built around real searches.

Where does Dizayn fit?

Dizayn is a web design, SEO and GEO studio in Guadalajara, Mexico, working remotely with US businesses in English and Spanish. A website runs $3,000-15,000 per project with managed hosting included, and typically launches in 3 to 6 weeks.

  • The domain is registered in your name, and you pay the yearly renewal.
  • We invoice in USD under an English contract, and you can pay by PayPal (card), bank wire or crypto (BTC, USDC, USDT).
  • Guadalajara is on UTC−6 year-round: the same clock as Texas and Chicago in winter, one hour behind during US daylight time.

How to compare quotes

Ask every vendor for the same things in writing: page count, whether copy is included, languages, ecommerce or not, who pays for hosting and the domain, whose name the domain is in, what maintenance covers, and what each change costs after launch. Two quotes at the same price can include very different work.

FAQ

Is $1,500 a good price for a small business website?
It can be, if it's a template build with a few pages and your own copy. Clutch puts US agency rates at $100-149 an hour, so $1,500 buys roughly 10 to 15 hours of agency time. That's enough to set up a theme, not to plan, write and optimize a custom site.
Should I pay once or monthly for my website?
The most common model is a one-time project fee plus separate recurring costs. Website-as-a-subscription deals can cost more over time, and some of them keep ownership of the site if you stop paying. Always ask what happens to the site and domain if you cancel.
Who should own the domain?
You should. The domain is your business's address online. If a designer registers it under their own name and later disappears, getting it back can be a hassle. With Dizayn, the domain is registered in the client's name and the client pays the yearly renewal.
Why does an English and Spanish site cost more?
Because every page exists twice, with copy written for each audience rather than a translation widget, and the two versions have to be linked with hreflang tags so Google shows the right one. If a meaningful share of your customers search in Spanish, it usually pays for itself.
How long does a website take to build?
A small or mid-size business site usually takes 3 to 6 weeks with Dizayn. Large online stores and sites with third-party integrations take longer, and the most common delay on any project is waiting on copy and photos from the client.
