How do I improve an online store's SEO?
E-commerce SEO has four specific priorities that a corporate site doesn't face the same way: unique content per product (not copied from the manufacturer), product structured data, avoiding duplicate content across variants, and load speed at scale (hundreds of images and scripts, not just a handful of pages).
Why e-commerce SEO is different
A corporate site has dozens of pages, each with a clear purpose of its own. An online store can have thousands of product pages that look alike — same format, similar descriptions, sometimes copied straight from the supplier. That multiplies the risk of duplicate content, one of the most common reasons an e-commerce site doesn't rank despite having good paid traffic.
The four real priorities
1. Unique content per product
If your product description is the same one the manufacturer uses (and twenty other stores are copying it too), Google has no way to decide which to show first. An original description, even a short one, is the difference between competing and being invisible.
2. Product structured data (Product schema)
Lets your product show up in search results with price, availability, and rating visible directly — no need for the user to click through to see it. This boosts clicks even without a ranking improvement.
3. Avoiding duplicate content across variants
A product in 5 colors and 4 sizes can generate 20 nearly identical URLs if it's not handled carefully. Use canonical URLs to tell Google which is the "main" version of each product.
4. Load speed at scale
A category page with 40 products loads 40 images, not one. Compressing images, using modern formats (WebP), and progressively loading products (lazy loading) matter far more here than on a low-page-count site.
| Factor | Corporate site | Online store |
|---|---|---|
| Number of similar pages | Low | High (products, variants, filters) |
| Duplicate content risk | Low | High |
| Reliance on structured data | Optional | Critical (price, availability) |
| Images per page | Few | Many (product gallery) |
What about category pages?
Category pages need their own unique intro text (not just a product grid) to have something Google can index as relevant content — a category with zero text competes at a disadvantage against one that has it.
