How are SEO and GEO different?
SEO aims to get your site ranking higher in classic Google results — a list of links. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) aims to get systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews to cite you directly as the source of the answer, without the person necessarily clicking any link at all. Different goals, built on the same technical and content foundation.
Why this question matters more every month
When someone searches something on Google and the answer shows up in an AI-generated summary above the normal results, a meaningful share of those people never click through — they already got their answer right there. Your site can sit at position one in the classic results and still not get that visit, because the AI summary resolved the search first.
What SEO and GEO share
- A healthy technical foundation: speed, semantic structure, an indexable site. Without this, neither Google nor an AI model can trust your content.
- Specific, verifiable content: real numbers, clear answers, no "it depends" without explaining on what.
- Local authority signals: Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent information — both systems use these to decide whether to trust a source.
Where they diverge
Answer format
Classic SEO rewards complete, well-structured content a human reads start to finish. GEO rewards having the specific answer in the first sentence, in plain direct text, before any brand introduction — because that's how an AI model extracts a passage to cite.
Structured data
An FAQPage schema that exactly matches questions and answers visible on the page helps both, but matters especially for GEO — it's the most direct signal that content answers a specific question.
Measurement
SEO is measured with rankings and traffic in Search Console. GEO is measured by asking the models directly and documenting what they answer — a more manual process, since there's no official "Search Console" for AI answers yet.
Why a Guadalajara business shouldn't pick just one
Ignoring classic SEO means losing the traffic that still arrives through normal results — which is still the majority. Ignoring GEO means that when someone asks ChatGPT or sees an AI Overview about your category, the answer cites your competitor instead of you — without you ever finding out you lost that chance.
