Nearshore vs. Offshore vs. a US Agency: Time Zones, Cost and Language Compared

Written by the Dizayn team

Updated

Key takeaways

  • Guadalajara is on UTC-6 year-round: the same clock as Chicago and Houston in winter, one hour behind in summer. India runs on UTC plus 5:30.
  • Clutch lists digital marketing agencies at $100-149 per hour in the US and $25-49 in Mexico.
  • The US has 65.2 million Hispanic residents; if they're your customers, language matters as much as price.

What's the difference between nearshore and offshore?

Nearshore means hiring in a nearby country on the same or a similar clock; for the US, Mexico is the classic example. Offshore means hiring on another continent with a large time gap, such as India or the Philippines. Onshore means staying in your own country. Each option changes schedule overlap, cost and communication, not just the price tag.

How many hours apart is each option?

From a US city, Guadalajara is zero to two hours away depending on the city and the season. India is nine and a half to thirteen and a half hours away. That decides whether a question gets answered the same afternoon or the next day, and whether meetings land in business hours on both ends.

Mexico dropped daylight saving time in 2022, so Guadalajara stays on UTC-6. The US still switches: DST begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. Standard-time offsets for US zones are listed on time.gov.

CityWinter (Nov-Mar)Summer (Mar-Nov)Guadalajara vs. that city
New York, MiamiUTC-5UTC-41 hour behind in winter, 2 in summer
Chicago, Houston, DallasUTC-6UTC-5Same in winter, 1 hour behind in summer
DenverUTC-7UTC-61 hour ahead in winter, same in summer
Los AngelesUTC-8UTC-72 hours ahead in winter, 1 in summer
Bangalore, IndiaUTC plus 5:30UTC plus 5:3011.5 hours behind, all year

A concrete example: a 10am call in New York in January is 9am in Guadalajara and 8:30pm in Bangalore. In July, the same call is 8am in Guadalajara and 7:30pm in Bangalore. For a Chicago or Houston team, the gap with Guadalajara is zero to one hour all year, so a nearshore team can join a 9am standup, answer a Slack message at 3pm, and fix a typo on a landing page before your campaign goes live that afternoon. With a team in India, the same request reaches them in their evening, so the answer often comes the next morning, your time.

How much does each option cost?

Per Clutch, a digital marketing agency averages $100-149 per hour in the US, $25-49 in Mexico, also $25-49 in the Philippines, and under $25 in India. Those are market ranges, not quotes: the final price depends on scope, experience and what the service includes.

One caveat: Clutch's Mexico rate mostly reflects local-market pricing. Serving a US client adds real work (everything in English, USD invoices, IRS paperwork), and that shows up in the price. For reference, Dizayn charges $3,000-15,000 per website project, $1,200-4,000 per month for SEO, and $1,800-5,000 per month for GEO (visibility in AI search). We break it down in what a Mexican agency charges.

Why does language matter if your customers are Hispanic?

Because good Spanish copy is written, not translated. Per the Census, Spanish accounts for 61.1% of people age 5 and older who speak a language other than English at home. If you sell to that audience, your site and ads need to sound native.

An offshore agency may write solid English, but writing for a Hispanic customer in Houston or Los Angeles is a different job: idioms, tone, cultural references and the words people actually type into Google. A Mexican agency works in Spanish as a first language and in English with your team. For more on this, see our guide to Spanish-language marketing for Hispanic businesses.

What changes legally and in payments?

With a US agency, the paperwork is domestic: a W-9 and, where it applies, a 1099. With any foreign vendor, nearshore or offshore, the vendor gives you an IRS W-8 form and you keep it on file. Payment changes too: an international wire, PayPal or stablecoins instead of a check or ACH.

What matters is getting it in writing: an English contract, USD invoices, the W-8 before the first invoice, and the domain in your name. Dizayn accepts PayPal (card) and bank wire, and fills in the IRS W-8 form that applies. The full walkthrough is in how to pay a Mexican agency. For your specific tax situation, check with your accountant.

When does each option make sense?

A US agency makes sense when budget isn't the deciding factor or you need in-person meetings. Offshore fits well-defined, low-touch work where maximum savings matter more than speed. A nearshore marketing agency fits when you want real savings without giving up shared hours or language fluency.

  • US agency: in-person meetings, local hiring requirements, a generous budget.
  • Offshore: repetitive tasks with clear specs, deliverables that can wait a day.
  • Nearshore (Mexico): projects with frequent back-and-forth, bilingual websites, marketing to Hispanic customers, small teams that need same-day answers.

If you're thinking about handing off your website, our guide to outsourcing web design to Mexico covers that decision in detail.

FAQ

What does onshore mean?
Onshore means hiring inside your own country: for a US business, a US agency. It has the least friction on time zones and paperwork, and usually the highest hourly rate.
Is the Philippines cheaper than Mexico for digital marketing?
Not necessarily. Clutch's table for digital marketing agencies puts the Philippines and Mexico in the same $25-49 per hour range, with India under $25. The real difference between Mexico and the Philippines is the clock, not the rate.
Does nearshore mean hiring employees abroad?
No. It can mean employees or freelancers, but also hiring an agency that delivers a complete service. With an agency you don't manage payroll or staff: you sign a contract, receive invoices, and the agency is accountable for the result.
How long does a project with a nearshore agency like Dizayn take?
A website takes 3 to 6 weeks. For SEO, technical and local results usually show in 4 to 8 weeks, with sustained growth in 3 to 6 months.
Does Dizayn already work with US clients?
Not yet. Our published case studies are Mexican businesses, such as Luvory, Studio Yume and Vexon. We work remotely in English and Spanish, which is why we publish USD pricing, sign contracts in English and invoice in dollars.
