Product Photography for E-commerce: What You Actually Need

Written by the Dizayn team

What does product photography for e-commerce actually need?

An e-commerce product photography session needs to cover four distinct functions: catalog (white background, multiple angles), detail (real texture and finish), context (real-life use), and scale (so the buyer understands actual size). A session that only covers one of the four leaves critical information unresolved for the buyer.

The four functions of a good session

1. White background / catalog

The e-commerce standard. Marketplaces like Amazon and Mercado Libre require it for the main image — no distracting shadows, centered product, even lighting.

2. Multiple angles

Front, side, back, and any angle where the product has a relevant detail. An online buyer can't hold the product in their hands — multiple angles are the substitute for that physical interaction.

3. Texture and finish detail

Stitching, material, surface texture, real color under neutral light. This is the information most often lost in generic photos, and the one that drives the most returns when it's missing.

4. Use context (lifestyle)

The product in a real-use situation. This is the photo that generates purchase desire on social media and at the top of the product page — the white background sells information, lifestyle sells the experience.

Why this reduces returns

The most-cited reason for returning an e-commerce product is "it wasn't as shown in the photos." That almost always means an incomplete session: not enough angles to show real size, no detail shot for exact texture or color, or only lifestyle photos with no white-background reference.

How much does this cost?

Cost depends on the number of products and angles per product you need. Check the real range in our product photography cost in Guadalajara guide. If you also need product video, here's what type of video your brand needs.

FAQ

What kind of photos do I need to sell a product online?
At minimum: a white/neutral background photo (required by most marketplaces), 3-4 angles of the product, a detail shot (texture, material, finish), and at least one lifestyle/context photo showing the product in real use.
Does product photography actually reduce returns?
Yes. Most e-commerce returns cite 'the product wasn't as shown in the photos' as the reason. Photos with multiple angles, real texture/color detail, and clear scale close that gap between expectation and the real product.
Do I need both white-background and lifestyle photos, or just one?
Both serve different purposes: white background is the catalog/marketplace standard (Amazon, Mercado Libre require this format), while lifestyle/context photos are what generates purchase desire on social media and the product page.
How much does a product photography session for e-commerce cost?
It varies by number of products and angles per product. Check the real range in our [product photography cost in Guadalajara guide](/en/blog/product-photography-cost-guadalajara).
